Higher Water Loss on Earth-like Exoplanets in Eccentric Orbits

چکیده

Abstract The climate of a terrestrial exoplanet is controlled by the type host star, orbital configuration and characteristics atmosphere surface. Many rocky exoplanets have higher eccentricities than those in Solar System, about 18% planets with masses <10 M⊕ e > 0.1. Underexplored are implications such high on atmosphere, climate, potential habitability planets. We use WACCM6, state-of-the-art fully-coupled Earth-system model, to simulate climates two Earth-like planets; one circular orbit (e = 0), an eccentric 0.4) same mean insolation. quantify effects eccentricity atmospheric water abundance loss given importance liquid for habitability. asymmetric temperature response results vapour mixing ratio stratosphere (>20 ppmv) that approximately five times greater (∼4 ppmv). This leads at most ∼3 increases both hydrogen rate ocean compared case. Using Planetary Spectrum Generator, we idealised transmission spectra cases. find absorption features stronger all wavelengths 0.4 spectrum Hence, highly-eccentric may be prime targets future spectroscopy observations confirm, or otherwise, presence vapour.

Earth-like worlds on eccentric orbits: excursions beyond the habitable zone

Many of the recently discovered extrasolar giant planets move around their stars on highly eccentric orbits, and some with e& 0±7. Systems with planets within or near the habitable zone (HZ) will possibly harbour life on terrestrial-type moons if the seasonal temperature extremes resulting from the large orbital eccentricities of the planets are not too severe. Here we use a three-dimensional g...

Fuzzy Sliding Mode for Spacecraft Formation Control in Eccentric Orbits

The problem of relative motion control for spacecraft formation flying in eccentric orbits is considered in this paper. Due to the presence of nonlinear dynamics and external disturbances, a robust fuzzy sliding mode controller is developed. The slopes of sliding surfaces of the conventional sliding mode controller are tuned according to error states using a fuzzy logic and reach the pre-define...

Water in exoplanets.

Exoplanets--planets orbiting around stars other than our own Sun--appear to be common. Significant research effort is now focused on the observation and characterization of exoplanet atmospheres. Species such as water vapour, methane, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide have been observed in a handful of hot, giant, gaseous planets, but cooler, smaller planets such as Gliese 1214b are now analys...

Two New Candidate Planets in Eccentric Orbits

Doppler measurements of two G–type main–sequence stars, HD210277 and HD168443, reveal Keplerian variations that imply the presence of companions with masses (M sin i ) of 1.28 and 5.04 MJUP and orbital periods of 437 d and 58 d, respectively. The orbits have large eccentricities of e=0.45 and e=0.54, respectively. All 9 known extrasolar planet candidates with a=0.2–2.5 AU have orbital eccentric...
